Three must-do Maui activities

Maui is a tropical paradise that is renowned for its stunning beaches, lush greenery, and a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. From the picturesque Road to Hana to the breathtaking Haleakala National Park, there is no shortage of activities to do on Maui.

Here, we’re sharing the top three activities (in no particular order) that are a must for anyone visiting our beautiful Valley Isle:

1. Snorkeling at Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is located a few miles off the coast of Maui. It is a prime snorkeling destination and is home to hundreds of species of fish, coral formations, and other marine life. The crystal-clear waters of the crater offer excellent visibility, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or a beginner, the Molokini Crater is a must-visit spot.

There are numerous snorkeling charters that run out of Maalaea harbor and Kihei. We absolutely love Maui Snorkel Charters for outstanding service and small groups that allow you to enjoy the waters without a crowd!

2. Road to Hana
The Road to Hana is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world and is a must-do activity when visiting Maui. The drive takes you through lush rainforests, past cascading waterfalls, and along dramatic coastal cliffs. There are plenty of stops along the way, including the Garden of Eden Arboretum and the Wai'anapanapa State Park. The Road to Hana is an unforgettable experience that you won't want to miss.

Fun fact: there are 620 curves and 59 bridges (many one-way) on Hana Highway – otherwise known as Road to Hana! Driving it is certainly safe, but not for the faint of heart. We recommend taking it at your own pace – you’re on island time, after all – and allowing locals to pass so they can get on with their day. We always recommend a camper van trip to Hana so you can stay a few days and truly enjoy everything the area has to offer!

3. Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak, the Haleakala Crater, which stands at 10,023 feet. The park covers over 33,000 acres and is home to a variety of native flora and fauna. Visitors can hike through the park's trails, watch the sunrise or sunset from the summit, or go on a guided tour of the park. The park is a great way to experience Maui's natural beauty and learn about its rich history!

A couple tips – sunrise on Haleakala requires a ticket for admission from 3 AM to 7 AM. Be sure to be prepared by visiting the national park’s website for more information! If you can’t snag sunrise tickets, we encourage you to check out sunset, which is just as beautiful and also a little warmer than sunrise (it can get really cold up there!). During the daytime you can visit the park anytime!

All in all, Maui is a destination that is so unique and offers something for everyone. Whether you're a beach bum, an adventure-seeker, or a nature lover, name it and Maui probably offers it. Be sure to add these top three activities to your van life itinerary for a truly unforgettable experience!
