What to pack for winter and spring travel to Hawai’i

If you're planning a trip to Hawaii during the winter or spring seasons, it's important to pack accordingly. While Hawaii is known for its warm and sunny weather year-round, temperatures can still fluctuate and unexpected rain showers can occur.

We oftentimes find that our guests who arrive with just a backpack or smaller travel pack are so much happier at the end of their trip not having to lug around a large suitcase because you need surprisingly little when camping around the island!

All of our camper vans provide everything you need during your stay, so just consider bringing your clothing and toiletries and plan to pick up food when you arrive. Each of our vans come equipped with basic kitchen kits, including a camp stove and propane, as well as a cooler. Here are some essential items to consider packing for your trip:

  1. Lightweight layers: Even though temperatures typically range from the mid-60s to mid-80s during the winter and spring, it's still a good idea to pack lightweight layers such as long-sleeved shirts, pair of leggings or pants and a sweater or jacket for cooler evenings or air-conditioned indoor spaces.

  2. Sun protection: Don't forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong Hawaiian sun. The UV index can be high, even on cloudy days. Keep in mind that only reef-friendly sunblock is allowed and you can be fined for having sunscreen containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate.

  3. Swimwear: Hawaii, especially Maui, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, so make sure to pack two of your favorite swimsuit or board shorts for a day in the sun and surf - one for lounging at the beach and another for more physical activities like snorkeling, kayaking or cruising around on a SUP.

  4. Rain gear: While the rain begins to slow down in Hawaii when spring rolls around, it's still a good idea to pack a lightweight rain jacket in case of unexpected showers.

  5. Comfortable shoes: Whether you're planning on hiking to a waterfall or exploring the shops and restaurants in a town, comfortable shoes are a must. Consider packing a pair of hiking boots or sneakers that you don't mind getting wet, as well as sandals or flip flops (or slippahs, as they're known here!) for the beach.

By packing these essential items, you'll be prepared for whatever the winter and spring seasons in Hawaii may bring. And don't forget to leave some extra space in your suitcase for gifts to bring home!
