What to pack for Summer and Fall travel to Hawai'i

Summer is travel season, and what better place to take a leisurely mid-year vacation than Hawaii? We'll help you prepare for packing with ease with this break down of the best way to get your luggage ready to jet!

We oftentimes find that our guests who arrive with a smaller travel pack are so much happier at the end of their trip not having to lug around a large suitcase because you need surprisingly little when camping around the island! All of our camper vans provide everything you need during your stay, so consider bringing your clothing and toiletries and plan to pick up food when you arrive.

Despite fairly even temperatures year-round, summer and fall contain some of the hottest months on the island, so keep that in mind when prepping for your travels! Here are some essential items to think about when packing:

  1. Sleeveless tops, t-shirts + shorts: Hawai'i is generally very low-key and casual, which means that tanks, t-shirts and shorts or sundresses are the name of the attire game most everywhere you go. Keep this in mind, and also that you will likely be in a swimsuit 50% of the time while you're on island! No need to overpack elaborately planned outfits :)

  2. Sun protection: Don't forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong Hawaiian sun. The UV index can be high, even on cloudy days, and summer and fall can be brutal here in the drier parts of the island. Keep in mind that only reef-friendly sunblock is allowed and you can be fined for having sunscreen containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate.

  3. Swimwear: Hawaii, especially Maui, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, so make sure to pack two of your favorite swimsuit or board shorts for a day in the sun and surf - one for lounging at the beach and another for more physical activities like snorkeling, kayaking or cruising around on a SUP. Grab one easy coverup for when you're heading to the beach or pool, too!

  4. Comfortable shoes: Whether you're planning on hiking to a waterfall or exploring the shops and restaurants in a town, comfortable shoes are a must. Consider packing a pair of light hiking or sneakers that you don't mind getting wet, as well as sandals or slippahs for the beach.

  5. Limit your long sleeves and pants: Yes, temperatures do dip at night some evenings, but most of the time in these summer and fall months you'll find the evenings are incredibly pleasant. Bring a long sleeve and a pair of pants for traveling, but we don't recommend packing more than that.

  6. Books + entertainment: Last, but not least, be sure to include in your travel pack a book (or a few!), download some podcasts and your favorite music so you can have great entertainment while on your flight and at the beach!

By packing these essential items, you'll be prepared for the warmer seasons in Hawai'i!
