Our best tips to stay healthy while camping

Raise your hand if you're constantly over-indulging while traveling! Camping is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature, but it can also be a challenge to stay healthy in the great outdoors. Whether you're camping for a weekend or a week, there are some simple steps you can take to stay healthy and happy while camping:

  • Stay hydrated: One of the most important things you can do while camping is to stay hydrated. Bring plenty of water with you – we encourage you to have a reusable water bottle on hand to avoid single-use plastics and keep your camping trip more eco-friendly. Being dehydrated can cause headaches, fatigue, and even heat exhaustion, so make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day, especially if you're planning to do hiking or other physical activities.

  • Eat healthy foods: Just because you're camping doesn't mean you have to survive on junk food. Bring along healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, and granola bars to munch on throughout the day. In each of our camper vans you'll have access to a camp stove and propane, so plenty of opportunity to cook your own meals! Stick to whole foods like high quality protein, fruits, and vegetables to keep your energy levels up, your body healthy and to sleep well at night.

  • Stay active: Camping is a great opportunity to get some exercise and explore the outdoors. Take a hike, go for a swim, or rent a kayak or paddleboard. Not only will you feel good in your body, but you'll also be enjoying the beautiful scenery around you.

  • Protect yourself from the sun: Spending time outdoors means exposure to the sun. We all can use a little extra vitamin D, but make sure to also take precautionary steps to avoid over-doing it, particularly in the heat of the afternoon. Protect yourself by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as well as wearing a mineral-based and reef-safe sunblock.

By following these simple tips, you can stay healthy and happy while camping. Remember to drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods, stay active, and protect yourself from the sun. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can enjoy all the benefits of camping and avoid "vacation bloat" or after-effects of over-indulging during your Hawai'i travels!
