Best stand up paddleboard spots on Maui's west side

Note that this has been updated after the Lahaina + Kula fires on August 8, 2023 out of respect for the affected areas. Please check the area's accessibility and safety before exploring on the west side of Maui.

Maui's west side is home to some of the world's best stand up paddleboard spots! We can't recommend enough adding this fun activity to your list of must-do's when taking your island vacation. And p.s... don't forget to add a stand up paddleboard (or SUP) on to your camper van reservation when booking with us!

  • One of the most popular is Honolua Bay. This bay offers crystal clear waters and incredible views of the surrounding cliffs, and whether you're playing on a SUP or not, you need to check out this insanely beautiful location! You can find all kinds of marine life in Honolua Bay and it's surely not to miss.

  • Another great spot is Launiupoko Beach Park, which is perfect for beginners and families. Located just before Lahaina as you're heading westbound, we love Launiupoko for its calm waters, but also the option for small waves for those more experienced SUP riders who want to try a little SUP surfing!

  • For more advanced paddlers, Olowalu is a must-visit spot with its challenging waves and exhilarating surf. You can also SUP off of the Camp Olowalu property if you're staying there overnight (or you can enjoy a day there for a small fee, even if you do not have an overnight reservation), which is located in more of a protected bay, so allows for super calm waters, particularly first thing in the morning.

  • Lastly, don't forget to check out Ukumehame Beach Park, which is famous for its long, rolling waves that are perfect for SUP surfing!

Whether you're an experienced paddler or just getting started, Maui's west side has something for everyone.
